Cadair Hydro

Overview

The Mid Wales based plant is held via a related investment vehicle, Dragon Hydro Ltd. Dragon Hydro was set up and structured to deliver a 380kW mini hydro scheme in North Wales. In August 2012, financial close was reached with a London based Venture Capital Trust (VCT), Albion Ventures LLP, to provide capital in order to construct and commission the scheme. The project has completed almost four full years of trouble-free operation.

Design

The plant consists of around 2.5km of HDPE pipe, two intakes, a powerhouse, a pelton turbine generator, switchgear and connection into the local distribution network. Operation and Maintenance services are provided by Morben Hydro

Environmental

The company was in discussion with the Countryside Council for Wales, the Environment Agency and Snowdonia National Parks Authority from the earliest stages of the project, accommodating recommendations and requirements throughout the planning process. By working in close liaise with these authorities, Dragon Hydro ensured that the project has had only positive impact on the environment.

Energy Generation

The gross head of the scheme is 150m and the maximum turbine flow is 315 l/s. The scheme is designed to deliver a maximum electrical output of 375kWe to the national grid. The annual renewable energy generation has been approximately 1.6GWh on average.
